Paradigm Shift Intervention Monitoring | Commentary . Six Suspected H5N1 Cases In Agri Turkey Recombinomics Commentary January 1, 2006 Ahmet Akkus, the health director in Agri, confirmed four children from the same family were admitted to the hospital. Akkus says, "Kocyigit family cut the diseased chickens and ate them. After a few days later, Fatma(15),Ali Hasan(14), Hulya (11), Muhammed Ali(14) Kocyigit consulted the doctor due to high fever, cough, fatigue and oral bleeding. The patients were sent to Van 100th Yil Medical Faculty Research Hospital and are currently being treated there. On Sunday, in the town of Dogubeyaz?t near Agr?, Semra Topçu (35) was admitted to Van hospital on suspect of bird flu. Four children and another man had been taken under treatment in the eastern Turkish province of Agr? on suspect of bird flu. The above comments provide more detail on the six patients hospitalized. The detail suggests all four siblings developed symptoms within a few days of eating diseased chickens. They were hospitalized yesterday along with a fifth patient. The sixth patient, from a nearby village, was hospitalized today. The familial and geographical clustering in a region that has had at least one H5 confirmed outbreak increases the likelihood that the patients have been infected with H5N1. Other media reports described the symptoms as being pneumonia-like with one of the four siblings in serious condition. More information of the H5N1 status of the poultry and patients in the area would be useful. Map Media Resources |
