Confirms Third
Pediatric
Flu Death The above comments from the New York week 2 report confirm the third pediatric NY flu death this season, although only one has been reported in the CDC FluView. The above case was listed earlier as an unconfirmed case. The table below reflects the confirmation of this case from New York, as well as the recent confirmation of the cases in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Although the first case in Ohio (17F) may not ever be lab confirmed, confirmation has been reported for 18 of the 20 most recent cases, and only two of the cases (in week 2) have yet to be confirmed. These 20 recent cases match the total reported by the CDC through week1, and highlight the lag in the CDC reported as well as the explosion of cases in weeks 1 and 2 (17 cases for which 15 have already been confirmed). Most states have not yet made week 2 data public, so the number of confirmed cases not in the CDC FluView will likely exceed the number of FluView cases reported through week 1. This large number of recent cases suggest that the number of pediatric deaths in 2012-13 will exceed the 88 reported for 2007-08 and may rival the 153 reported in 2003-04, when the high number of pediatric deaths led to regulations which made pediatric deaths a reportable disease in the United States.
