The above list of 9 pediatric deaths will be cited in tomorrow’s week 2 FluView. These cases will increase the season total to 29. As seen in the table below, the 9 cases in week 2 are the highest for this season and are higher than any week last season (as seen in the week 1 figure above). However, there are at least 7 more lab confirmed cases including 5 which have been reported in state repots. Four of these five are from Colorado, which reported two cases in week 50 and 2 more in their week 2 report. The reasons for the delay in reporting these cases from Colorado, as well as the Indiana case that was reported in week 52, remains unclear.
In addition to the report of 9 pediatric deaths, the CDC week 2 FluView will also report a large spike in the Pneumonia and Influenza Death Rate, which rose from 7.3% in week 1 to 8.3% in week 2.
