Pediatric Flu
Deaths In Week 2
The above graph from the CDC week 2 FluView includes the nine newly cited pediatric deaths, which is also included in the state summary, as expected. However, there are 11 additional cases that have been lab confirmed (see list below) and two more under investigation (4M in Ohio and newborn F in Illinois). The week 2 FluView still has not cited cases noted last year in state reports (2 in Colorado in week 50 and 1 in Indiana in wee 52). The Colorado seasonal total has increased to four, with two more pediatric deaths cited in their week 2 report. Other states with lab confirmed cases that are not listed in the week 2 summary of 2012-12 cases include California, Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Thus, the number of lab confirmed cases is now at 41, with two other cases under investigation (not including the 17F in Ohio described in her obituary). The additional confirmed cases should produce another jump in pediatric deaths. The nine reported in week 2 are the most since the peak of the 2010-11 season, and that record will likely be broken in the near term, possibly as soon as the week 3 report if the CDC includes the cases reported in late 2012, as well as the new cases listed below for week 2.
