More H5N1 Case Clustering in Tangerang Indonesia Recombinomics Commentary 16:56 January 22, 2008 A 30-YEAR-OLD man has been confirmed as the 120th bird flu victim in the nation worst hit by the virus, the health ministry said. Two laboratory tests on the man showed that he was infected with the highly pathogenic virus, a statement from the ministry's bird flu centre said on Tuesday. The man, who is from the Jakarta satellite city of Tangerang, was first admitted to a private hospital there on Jan 14. The above comments describe another confirmed H5N1 in Tangerang, Indonesia. This case follows the January 16 death of an 8 year old, who was also a confirmed H5N1 case from Tangerang. Recent confirmed cases have been centered in or near Jakarta, and most have been from Tangerang, the location of the first confirmed cases in Indonesia, in 2005. The recent evolution of H5N1 is obscure, because there have been no sequences released since the beginning of 2007. Release of these sequences would be useful.
