Texas Pediatric Flu Deaths Increase To Seven
Recombinomics Commentary 12:15
January 24, 2013

City of El Paso Department of Public Health officials announced the death of a 12-year-old female who had acquired the influenza virus.

A total of 29 influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported during the 2012-2013 season from 17 states (Arkansas [1], Florida [2], Indiana [1], Kansas [1], Maine [1], Massachusetts [1], Michigan [4], Minnesota [1], Nebraska [1], New Jersey [2], New York [3], Ohio [1], South Carolina [1], Tennessee [1], Texas [6], Washington [1], and Wisconsin [1]).

The above comments (in red) described the seventh lab confirmed pediatric flu death in Texas this season.  As seen by the FluView week 2 totals (in blue), Texas has reported the largest number of pediatric deaths.  As seen in the list below, the second highest total is five for Colorado.  However, none of the five deaths in Colorado have been included in the FluView totals.

The updated list below has 19 cases that have been cited in state lab or media reports which have not been announced by the CDC.  Many states release weekly figures on Thursday or Friday, so the list will likely increase prior to the release of tomorrow's week 3 FluView, suggesting it will have another large increase in cases, which will raise to 2012-13 totals above the 34 pediatric deaths reported last season.

Since the number of cases will soon top 50, it is likely that the total for 2012-13 will exceed the 88 cases in 2007-08, which was severe and the highest total (excluding the large numbers in 2009-2011 due to H1N1pdm09) since lab confirmed pediatric death became reportable in 2004.
