Paradigm Shift Intervention Monitoring | Commentary Suspect Bird Flu Case from Cambodia Being Tested in Vietnam Recombinomics Commentary January 28, 2005 >> Meanwhile, a 25-year-old Cambodian woman with avian flu-like symptoms was admitted to a hospital in southern Vietnam and tests were being run to determine if she was infected, officials said. If the virus is confirmed, she would be the first human case outside Vietnam since the outbreak began in December.<< Several weeks ago Vietnam had expressed concerns about H5N1 infected birds coming into Vietnam across the Cambodian border. The first confirmed bird flu case in Vietnam had brought a chicken from Dong Thap, which shares its Western border with Cambodia. The genetic similarities between H5N1 isolates from Vietnam and Thailand raised questions about human cases in Laos and Cambodia because of their llocation between the two countries reporting bird flu cases. Earlier this season there were reports of patients from Laos and Cambodia coming across their border with Thailand to seek treatment for flu-like conditions. Media link |
