Paradigm Shift Intervention Monitoring | Commentary Almost 900,000 Poultry Culled in Vietnam This Month Recombinomics Commentary January 29, 2005 >>According to the Veterinary Department, on Jan. 28, an additional 29 bird flu outbreaks were reported in 16 communes of 10 districts in the provinces of Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, Bac Lieu, Long An, Ben Tre, Dong Nai, and Can Tho City. From Jan.1-28, bird flu outbreaks occurred in 116 districts of 30 cities and provinces nationwide. A total of 225,690 chickens, 289.590 ducks and geese, and 381,850 quails were culled. << The numbers listed above reveal the continuing spread of H5N1 in poultry, The number killed or culled this month was 130,000 on Jan 12. It jumped to 254,000 on Jan 17, 296,000 on Jan 19, 504,000 on Jan 22, 557,600 on Jan 23, and 828,605 on Jan 27. Yesterady, Jan 28 the number culled this month was up to 897,130. The number of confirmed cases and clusters of confirmed or suspected H5N1 avian influenza cases also continues to climb, and the evidence for human to human transmission is also quickly accumulating in several locations in Vietnam. The critically ill patient from Cambodia also suggests the spread of human and poultry infections extends beyond Vietnam's borders. Media link |
