27 Week 4 Flu Deaths In Pennsylvania Raise Total To 102
Recombinomics Commentary 23:00
January 29, 2013

Lab positive influenza hospitalizations reported in Pennsylvania this season by week, 10/02/12 - 01/26/2013 (n= 2,564)

Pennsylvania Week 4 Hospitalizations
27 influenza-related deaths were reported last week, including one death a minor. Altogether, 102 flu-related deaths have been reported season-to-date. A majority (87%) of reported deaths are among the elderly (persons >65 years of age).

The above comments, from the Pennsylvania week 4 report cite 27 more flu deaths, which are slightly lower than the 35 reported in week 3, but above the 18 reported in week 1 and week 2.  Similarly, the 486 hospitalizations listed for week 4 in the above graph, are slightly above the 480 for week 3 and slightly below the totals of 577 and 521 for weeks 2 and 1, respectively.  Each if the four weeks in 2013 had hospitalizations and deaths that were markedly higher than the first 12 weeks of the 2012/2013 flu season.  The total of 102 lab confirmed deaths is the highest reported for this season in the United States.  Minnesota has reported 75 through week 3, which was the same as Pennsylvania.

The continued high level of hospitalizations and deaths suggests that the week 4 P&I death rate will be above the 9.8% reported for week 3.

Pennsylvania is also reporting its first lab confirmed pediatric flu death.  The state report does not give the location, but the age of 10-18 matches the age of the pediatric death (17M) cited in the Ridgway obituary (see list below).
