Paradigm Shift Intervention Monitoring | Commentary . H5N1 Spread in Bulgaria? Recombinomics Commentary February 4, 2006 Two dead swans have been found south of the Black Sea port Burgas and a dead pelican has been detected near the Danube village of Marten. Another dead bird - a falcon - has been found near Russe. Authorities in northeastern Bulgaria reported Saturday they found the bodies of seven dead swans and one wild goose, raising fears that birdflu has spread to this country from neighboring Romania. The above comments indicate H5N1 is spreading throughout Bulgaria. Earlier Romania had warned that H5N1 positive birds were heading south into Bulgaria, but the recent confirmed of H5 in a swan coupled with the above comments indicate H5N1 is on the move in the area. To the south Turkey has reported widespread outbreaks of H5N1 in January and Cyprus recently confirmed the presence of H5N1. H5N1 has been in the area since October, so the lack of earlier reporting is a concern. However, at this tie reporting is increasing in several countries, raising additional reporting issues in neighboring countries which have yet to acknowledge H5N1 infections. Map Media Resources |
