H5 Confirmed in France

Recombinomics Commentary

February 17, 2006

A wild duck found died in Ain was most probably carrying virus H5N1 of the aviary influenza, which would be the first case in France, indicated Friday the ministry for the Agriculture, which makes state of "strong presumptions" after a first examination.

The above translation confirms H5 in France, making it the seventh EU country to confirm H5 or H5N1.  The confirmations in western Europe raise credibility issues for claims by England and Spain that the tested dead birds in their countries are truly H5N1 negative.

Clearly H5N1 is present throughout western, central, and eastern Europe, and countries in Europe that have failed to detect H5N1 are cause for concern.
