Paradigm Shift Intervention Monitoring | Commentary Three Doctors and Five Nurses Infected by Marburg Virus Recombinomics Commentary March 25, 2005 >> Two doctors, one Angolan, the other Vietnamese, had also been diagnosed with the disease, Governor Kangulo said. << The Marburg virus infection toll on health care workers continues to rise. On Tuesday the death of two nurses brought the total deaths for nurses to five, all in the past week. The virus spread from Uige in northern Angola, to the capital, Luanda. There were two confirmed deaths there on Thursday, a 15 year-old boy and an Italian pediatrician. A third death is being investigated, and at least three others in Luanda have been diagnosed as being positive for Marburg virus. The two doctors described above raise the number of reported health care worker infections to eight. The large number of infected health care workers and the spread of the virus to the capitalof Luanda is cause for concern. Because of the relatively long incubation period, more cases are expected.
