Suspect H5N1 Cluster in  Garut Indonesia
Recombinomics Commentary 16:29
March 25, 2009

Siblings, Ikah (35) and Aning (30), residents of Kecamatan Cigedug Kabupaten Garut suspected to be infected by avian influenza (AI) virus or bird flu. Until today noon (25/3), they both are still under treatment at dr Slamet hospital, Garut.

Madjid explained that about a week ago, their neighbor’s chickens suddenly died. After that some people within the neighborhood developed breathing problem sign but not as severe as Ikah and Aning.

The above translation describes a suspect H5N1 cluster in Garut, Indonesia (see updated map). Two brothers are in isolation with bird flu symptoms.  Milder cases have been reported in the neighborhood, but the neighbors are not hospitalized.  Dead poultry is being tested.

The cases are likely H5N1 infected, and may test positive because the cases are advanced.  If neighbors improve it is not likely that they will be hospitalized or tested.  Thus cluster has some similarities with an earlier cluster in Garut, but is considerably smaller, at this time.

More information on disease onset dates of the siblings and neighbors will be useful.
