The above April 23 APHIS list cites 2 newly reported H5N2 farm outbreaks. However, the table has a serious lag.  Although 10 farms were confirmed on April 22, agency reports and country bans signal more outbreaks confirmed on April 22 that have not been added to the table.

In Minnesota, one of two H5 bird flu confirmed Kandiyohi County farms (#10) was added, but #11 has not.  Similarly a Clay County chicken farm confirmation has led to country bans of Clay County, signaling confirmation on April 22 (see H5N2 map).

In Wisconsin (87,000 turkeys in Chippewa County and 800,000 chickens in Jefferson County have not been added (although new country bans of Chippewa county have been announced, indicating conirmation on April 22), which is also true for an H5 confirmed turkey farm in Barron County.

In Iowa H5 has been confirmed in Sac County within the control zone of the Buena Vista County farm (the proximity of the Buena Vista farm to the Sac border had led to earlier bans).

Moreover, CFIA has indicated a third farm in Oxford County was H5 confirmed in Canada.  This farm was within the control zone of the 2nd farm, raising concerns of clustering linked to surveillance of farms near conirmed farms.

Thus, the above cases raise concenrs that at least four more farms were confirmed on April 22, raising that total to 14, with another unannounced series confirmed on April 23.

This explosion of cases has led to a state of emergency in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and an agency alert in Iowa.
