However,
the explosion of cases was in chicken
farms in Iowa. Two large layer farms in Sioux County (3.7
million and 1.7 million were announced in a press release and
associated press confernce, as well as two layer farms (240,000 and
98,000) in O'Brien County. In addition, there was a pullet farm
(250,000) in Osceola County, but only the Sioux Country farm with 1.7
million layers is on the above list. The two large farms in Sioux
County appear to have impacted Michael's Food, an acquisition by Post
Holdings, who announced the H5N2 infection of supplier Iowa farms with
5.5 million layers. Similarly,
a third Barron County farm in Wisconsin (108,000 turkeys) was announced
in a Department of Agriculture TCP press release and Hong
Kong banned poultry from Steele County in Minnesota, increasing the
number of affected counties in Minnesota to 19. The location of
this county in southeastern Minnesota suggests more outbreaks will be
reported in Minnesota as wild birds continue to migrate to the north. In
addition, APHIS announced the detection of H5N2 in dead wild birds
(duck and goose) in McKracken County, Kentucky. Although
collection dates were not announce, the location is near the snow
geese confirmations in St Charles County Missouri, which were collected
on March 5, further supporting the wild bird origin of March
outbreaks in Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas. Recombinomics
