MERS-CoV Transmission In France Confirmed
Recombinomics Commentary 02:00
May 12, 2013

A second French case of infection with the new coronavirus (NCoV) was confirmed during the night from Saturday to Sunday by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The reviews from someone who shared the room with a contaminated hospital Valenciennes patient were positive.

The above translation confirms MERS-CoV transmission in France (see map).  The nocosomial case (51M) has similarities with SARS-CoV clusters in 2003 when health care workers and patients were frequently infected with coronavirus from infected patients.

Like the cluster in England, MERS-CoV was transported from the Middle East to a European country, where onward transmission was detected in contacts.  Four other contacts were symptomatic and tested negative, but false negatives are common, especially if the samples tested were from the upper respiratory from cases with mild symptoms.

Detail on the testing of symptomatic health care workers would be useful.
