Commentary Fujian H5N1 Clade 2.3.2 and M230I Confirmed in Russia Recombinomics Commentary 20:12 May 26, 2008 Sequences from two more gene segments (HA and MP) from A/chicken.Primorji/1/2008 have been released at Genbank and they are closely related to the corresponding sequences from two whooper swans in Japan. Like the sequences from Japan, the HA has M230I and is closely related to clade 2.3.4 isolates from wild birds in Hong Kong. Similarly, the MP sequence is related to clade 2.3.4 sequences from wild birds in Hong Kong. Thus, the H5N1 in Russia, Japan, and South Korea (which is 99.7% or more identical with the Japan sequences) are Fujian clade 2.3 reassortants. None of these countries (see satellite map) has previously reported Fujian H5N1 infections, and neither Japan nor Russia have reported H5N1 in these regions previously. The widespread appearance of the Fujian reassortants, while wild birds are migrating into the area raises concerns of a major Fujian H5N1 expansion. These outbreaks are consistent withy transport and transmission within the East Asia flyway, which would link these outbreaks to North America via Alaska.
