In addition to the above full HA sequence from June, 2010, a partial sequence from a swine in Illinois, A/swine/Illinois/02984/2010, was released. The Illinois sequence also had the same G158E duplication, as well as most of the newly acquired sequences found in the Iowa sequence, signaling spread by clonal expansion in the United States mid-west. The Illinois sequence was collected in March, 2010 raising concerns that the sequence is now widespread in swine in the US. Earlier sequence data and phylogenetic analysis indicated pH1N1 was also spreading in swine in the mid-west, raising concerns that the co-circulation of these two swine H1n1 strains will lead to more recombination and efficient transmission of Ohio-related sequences in humans. In August, 2007 twenty-six attendees of the Huron County Fair has respiratory symptoms, and swine H1N1 was confirmed and sequenced in two of the presenters. The spread of this strain in swine, with a duplicated G158E and newly acquired pH1N1 sequences, raises concerns of parallel pandemics, co-circulating and evolving via accelerated recombination.
