The finding of over 240 confirmed cases (media reports describe 2 additional confirmations in Nuremberg for birds that had tested negative initially) in less than one month suggets the number of confirmed cases may increase significantly.. At Kelbra lake there are 214 confirmed deaths, but not all collected birds have been tested, and 10-20 dead birds are being pulled from the lake each day. The total number of birds collected at the lake is now approaching 300. Most of the recent dead birds have been Black-neck grebes, and 208/214 confirmed deaths at the lake were Black-neck grebes. Smaller number of H5N1 positive birds are being reported in Bavaria and Saxony, but the number of species confirmed in the current outbreak in Germany is now up to eight, as are the number of locations.
