The health department said Wednesday the fifth case of variant influenza A was found in southern Indiana's Jackson County after four earlier cases were linked to the LaPorte County Fair in northwestern Indiana. The flu strain can be directly transmitted between swine and people, and human infections are most likely to occur in people who are near live infected pigs.
The health department says laboratory tests are pending on possibly more cases. Similar illnesses have occurred in Ohio, and federal health officials are investigating.
The above comments from an AP story describe a fifth confirmed H3N2v case in Indiana. However, the associated ISDH press release remains shrouded in mystery. Although the AP story appeared this evening, it has 7:17 AM time stamp.
Attempts to track down the press release via discussions with County and Indiana State Health Department personnel were unsuccessful. The press release was acknowledge but its location on Indiana websites remains far from clear and it may have been pulled because the information was “obsolete”. A new press release, pending confirmation by the CDC was expected this evening, but its presence and existence is also far from clear.
However, comments from lab personnel indicate Jackson County swabs are being collected and sent to the ISDH lab. The collections began Friday, per an alert issued in association with confirmed cases at the LaPorte County Fair in Indiana.
Moreover, comments indicated that symptomatic cases in Jackson County have been noted for the past six weeks, but these cases were not tested prior to the alert.
