H5N1 Confirmed Near Munich Germany
Recombinomics Commentary
August 3, 2007

at a Fischweiher in direct proximity of the storage reservoir three dead stick ducks had been found. The high-speed investigation had resulted in the suspicion on also the bird flu virus H5N1 dangerous for humans. This suspicion had now confirmed itself after an investigation of the Friedrich Loeffler institute.

storage reservoir in the district the Ebersberg likewise 14 dead water birds had been found. Those are now examined

A dead stick duck, found at the pond property Birkenhof, was carrier of the bird flu virus H5N1. Already on Tuesday, 31 July, in the morning hours, had brought a feuerwehrmann from Aschheim three dead stick ducks from the pond property

The above translation describes a number of dead birds near Munich which have tested positive for H5N1.  Munich is south of Nuremberg, where earlier H5N1 infections were reported and close to regions in Bavaria which had reported H5N1 infections in 2006 (see satellite map).

These new positives provide additional evidence for endemic H5N1 in Germany.  Once again the positives are during the summer, which long range migration is minimal, and the new positives expand the geographical range and H5N1 positives in the summer.  The H5N1 in multiple locations (in four states) in Germany, as well as multiple locations in the Czech Republic and France, indicate H5N1 in Europe is widespread.

Neighboring countries that at not reporting H5N1 for 2007 need a serious upgrade in surveillance programs.
