Commentary H3N2v Confirmed
In Washington County Fair Swine The above comments confirm H3N2v at the Washington County Fair near Salem, Indiana, strongly suggesting that the attendees who developed influenza like illness and are influenza A positive will also be H3N2v confirmed. Swabs have been collected at the St Vincent Salem Hospital who forwarded them to the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), who then forwarded suspect samples to the CDC for H3N2v confirmation. Results are expected Thursday. SDH has acknowledged 11 confirmed cases, but media reports have cited three more as well as two confirmed cases at the Monroe County Fair. However, the largest number of confirmed cases in the area has been linked to the Jackson County fair where 4 or 5 cases have been confirmed. Another case has been confirmed in Jennings County, which is adjacent to Jackson. Symptomatic patients have been noted in Jackson County in the six weeks prior to the fair. Moreover, Indianapolis is just north of this cluster of cases and 2000 swine have been dismissed from the Indiana State Fair because five swine devolved a fever over 105 after arrival at the fair.
