Pennsylvania and Indiana trH3N2 Identities Signal Pandemic
Recombinomics Commentary 18:00
September 7, 2011

The CDC has released three sets of sequences (at GISAID) from the Washington County Fair cluster in Pennsylvania.  All were from females 2-9 years of age, but collected over a long time frame, including PA/11 collected 5 days after the end of the fair.:

A/Pennsylvania/09/2011 – 2F collected 8/20
A/Pennsylvania/10/2011 – 9F collected 8/26
A/Pennsylvania/11/2011 – 9F collected 8/25

These sequences were closely related to each other, as well as Indiana/08/2011, in all 8 gene segments, indicating these sequences represent efficient transmission of trH3N2 in humans.

The detection of the same trH3N2 in Indiana and Pennsylvania in patients not linked is similar to the data generated at the start of the 2009 pandemic H1N1 pandemic.

NOTE: The CDC has changed the collection date for Pennsylvania/10/2011 from July 27 to August 26 as reflected above.
