This same combination was found in sequences in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States (see list here and here). The same combination of polymorphisms was present in all four sequences from Africa. The detection of all three polymorphisms indicates S188T is spreading in human populations via clonal expansion. The finding of two sequences in countries where the number of recent HA sequences is limited suggests that S188T may be in a high percentage of recent H1N1 infections in Thailand, India, Ghana, and South Africa. These high frequencies may signal linkage of S188T to immunological escape and the emergence of a dominant sub-clade, as was seen during the fixing of H274Y in seasonal H1N1. The rapid spread of S188T remains a cause for concern. Media Links Recombinomics
