HPAI H5 Confirmed in AnHui Province in China

Recombinomics Commentary

October 22, 2005

AnHui Province, Tianchang City, Liangying

Date of outbreak 10/20/05

550/2100 chickens and geese died

44,736 culled

Diagnosis H5 HPAI

The above information is from an OIE report filed today in China. Thus far, all H5 HPAI in Asia has been H5N1, so it seems that the above outbreak will be more H5N1 wild bird flu.  The report comes days after a report on an outbreak in Inner Mongolia (see world map).  These reports appear to be tracking H5N1 migration from Mongolia to warmer areas in China.  The path has now reached the Yellow Sea and is a short distances from South Korea and Japan.

At the same time, there have been new outbreaks in European Russia, suggested another migration heading southwest from Siberia.  These reports suggest H5N1 will continue to move into new regions, extending its global reach and setting the stage for novel recombinants.
