A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in Nghe An, a central province of Vietnam, the local newspaper Liberty Saigon reported on Wednesday, citing a statement from the provincial People's Committee.

The outbreak was spotted at the Dien Hong commune, causing the death of nearly 1,000 poultry.

Specimens from the dead poultry have recently been tested positive to the bird flu virus strain H5N1, according to the statement.

The above comments confirm H5N1 in central Vietnam. These reports follow confirmation of H5N1 in northern Laos and Thailand, raising concerns of endemic H5N1 in the region (see satellite map).  Additional reports indicate the H5N1 was been poultry sonce August.  During this time period, Bengalsdesh also reported H5N1 in poultry, raising surveillance issues in adjacent country.

Similarly, local health officials have confrmed H5N1 in a fatal infection in Semarang, whoch once again raise reporting issues in Indonesia.

H5N1 reporting issues remain a hazard to the world's health.
