Commentary Further
Spread of H5N1 in Northern Thailand Provincial livestock officials disinfected bird flu-hit Ban Hua Khao, where the chickens died of unknown causes, culled scores more chickens and collected the carcasses for lab tests. Despite all efforts to contain bird flu, Sukhothai was hit again as the deadly virus was discovered on a fighting cock farm in Sawankhalok yesterday. Samples of blood and droppings from fighting cocks bred by farmer Pinyo Ketnil were collected for a second lab test following the first last week. The above comments describe the spread of H5N1 in northern Thailand. Reports yesterday confirmed H5N1 at two locations, and the above comments indicate the H5N1 infections have spread (see satellite map). The reports from Thailand come as Laos and Vietnam have also reported confirmed H5N1 outbreaks in the past few days. In addition to the recent confirmed cases, official and media reports describe earlier outbreaks in August and September. However, the latest flurry of reports suggests infections are spreading. Similarly, Indonesia has confirmed a fatal H5N1 infection in Semerang, and is doing addition tests on another fatal pneumonia case in Bandung. These recent reports suggest human and poultry outbreaks will continue to rise in the near term.
