Fryeburg Pig Scramble Raises trH3N2 Swine Exposure Issues
Recombinomics Commentary 04:15
November 16, 2011

This press report has been incorrectly interpreted elsewhere as confirmation of transmission of a swine-origin reassortant A/H3N2 influenza virus to humans from pigs in New Hampshire.

The above comments from a curious ProMED commentary, strongly suggests that the fair linked to the two cases in Maine, A/Maine/06/2011 and A/Maine/07/2011 is the Fryeburg Fair, which is the largest fair in Maine and was held between October 2-9 , consistent with the description of the first Maine case, who visited an agricultural fair in the week prior to disease onset on October 7.

Fryeburg, Maine is adjacent to the Hew Hampshire border, fueling the rumor addressed in the ProMED commentary.

In addition, the Fryeburg Fair hosted two pig scrambles (on October 7 and 9), and a video of one has been posted on youtube.  A pig scramble was the swine exposure for one of the Maine cases, but the piglets in the video appear healthy.

However, the video also has an audio, which records the videographer coughing throughout the 6 minute, 41 second upload.
