Although the news article indicated that the ducks did not show bird flu symptoms, it should be noted that H5N1 can infect brains of mice and cause hind leg paralysis. Since annual bird migrations offer new opportunities for dual infections and new recombinants, a lab diagnosis would be useful. Other viruses, such as NDV, also can cause neurological problems.
