The above translation describes another suspect H5N1 case (9M) in Riau Province. Once again the physician treating the patient diagnoses bird flu, but lab confirmation by the central labs is not forthcoming, even though samples have been sent three times.
Confirmed H5N1 have been reported from this area previously, although Indonesia has not confirmed any human cases since July, even though confirmed H5N1 has been widespread in poultry.
The above case is another example raising serious questions about Indonesian undercounts of cases and an artificial elevation of the case fatality rate.
Mild cases of H5N1 in Indonesia remain causes of concern.
