The above translation describes another suspect H5N1 in Semarang. As indicated above, the media continues to describe the earlier fatal case (15F) as positive for H5N1, even though the Ministry of Health has stated that the patient was negative.
This case was widely reported by the AP and Reuters and included quotes from the attending physician that the lab tests by the Ministry of Health were positive. The earlier case (15F) preceded a similar sequence of events regarding the cluster of 17 patients in Makissar, which were said to have been lab confirmed PCR positive, but positive lab results were denied by the Ministry of Health. Moreover, 2 additional patients were recently admitted to the same hospital in Makassar with bird flu symptoms, raising concerns of significant underreporting of H5N1 cases in Indonesia, where confirmed H5N1 in poultry is widespread.
