Paradigm Shift Intervention Monitoring | Commentary H5N1 Spread to Eleven Villages in Poland Recombinomics Commentary December 9, 2007 provincial veterinary officer Pawel Jakubczak told a news conference that the cull of some 110,000 birds was beginning on Sunday. There were 52 industrial-scale poultry farms and 232 smaller family-owned holdings within the danger zone, he added. The latest outbreak of avian flu has been diagnosed in 11 villages of central Poland's Zuromin district (county), one of Poland's principal poultry-raising areas. It is situated some 50 km (30 miles) from three bird flu sites discovered around the city of Plock earlier this month. The above comments describe a dramatic increase in H5N1 infections in Poland. In contrast to the smaller culls at three farms northwest of Plock (see satellite map), the latest outbreak has been confirmed in 11 villages in one of Poland’s principal poultry raising areas. Earlier reports of distribution of H5N1 infected meat to retail outlets raised concerns over controls in Poland, and this large outbreak adds to those concerns. More information on the infected villages and distribution of infected birds would be useful.
