Novel H3N2pdm11 In West Virginia
Recombinomics Commentary 16:30
December 09, 2011

The CDC has released sequences (at GISAID) for a novel H3N2pdm11 case from West Virginia, A/West Virginia/06/2011 from a 1F collected 11/21/11.  The sequences are unique because the N2 is swine related and distinct from the N2 in the human trH3N2 from 2010, (which includes the H3N2pdm11 cases).  All other gene segments match the lineage of H3N2pdm11, including a H1N1pdm09 M gene.

The CDC has also released sequences from a human trH1N2 case in Minnesota, A/Minnesota/19/2011, from a female collected on 11/04/11.  This isolate has internal genes that match human trH3N2 cases from 2010 and H3N2pdm11 genes.

More detail is expected in a CDC “Have You Heard?”  and Week 48 FluView later today.

These new combinations raise serious pandemic concerns.
