Fujian H5 Confirmed In Fraser Valley Canada
Recombinomics Commentary
December 12, 2014 21:00

The CFIA National Center for Foreign Animal Disease confirms that the novel H5N2 virus detected in BC contains 5 of 8 gene segments from highly pathogenic Eurasian H5N8 virus including the H5 gene and 3 of 8 segments from typical North American viruses including the N2 gene (wild bird origin).

The above comments from the CFIA December 12 OIE report confirms Fujian clade 2.3.4 is in Canada as a reassortant with a Fujian H5 and North American N2.  Mixing of H and N is similar to pandemic H1N1 (H1N1pdm09), which has a North American H1 and a Eurasian N1.

The result confirms a wild bird source for the Fraser Valley outbreak and raises concerns for hunters and organic farms, as well as countries south of Canada, including the United States.
