West Virginia
trH3N2 Cluster Raises Concerns
Recombinomics Commentary 12:30
December 19, 2011
The confirmation of a second
trH3N2 case in West Virginia increases pandemic concerns.
Details are sketchy, but the CDC is expected to provide more detail
this week in the week 50 FluView and/or another Have You Heard?
The first case, A/West
Virginia/06/2011 is novel because it has an N2 not seen in
the 10 prior trH3N2 cases. In the latest West
Virginia flu report (week 49) it is listed in week 47. The
related case is listed in week 49, and is designated as influenza
A. The CDC has investigated this case further, and details are
expected this week. However, the two week gap between reporting
dates raises concerns of additional cases.
A second
cluster involving a second reassortant is without precedent and
highlights the extreme instability of these novel cases, as well as the
adaptation to efficient transmission in humans.
