Bahrain on High H5N1 Alert

Recombinomics Commentary 11:22
December 29, 2007

Bahrain is now on "high alert" following an outbreak of bird flu in Saudi Arabia, Dr Al Mousawi said.

The above comments indicate Bahrain is on high alert because of its proximity to Saudi Arabia.  Promed also issued an alert based on reports of 38 H5N1 outbreaks in Saudi Arabia.

Alert levels are rising in the area.  H5N1 confirmation in Gharbiya led to an alert in Egypt and dispersal of Tamiflu to local clinics and pharmacies.  The recent H5N1 death has led to a heightened alert.

Similarly, Jordan just issued an alert based on activity in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Pakistan has also placed hospitals on alert following reports of a large cluster.  Additional reports have described a new suspect case.

The H5N1 in Pakistan may be migrating into the Middle East at this time.

Sequence data on outbreaks in Saudi Arabia and Egypt would be useful.
