Paradigm Shift Intervention Monitoring | Commentary . Avian flu downs dozens of ostriches The above articles on ostrich deaths in South Africa raise additional concerns. At the end of 2003 there was an equine influenza outbreak that close horse race tracks in South Africa. This was traced back to an equine flu outbreak in Wisconsin. Recently, greyhounds have died in Florida and they also are related to H3N8 equine outbreaks in Wisconsin and now in Florida. H5N1 isolates in Asia have polymorphisms in common with the H3N8 isolates, raising the possibility of more recombination and expanded host ranges. H5N2 caused the fatal infections in the ostriches in South Africa. |
